Finding Hope Through Hardship

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

During this unprecedented Corona virus time, what are you doing to bring hope and encouragement to the people in your workplace and sphere of influence?  What can you do to impact your world in a positive way when so much negativity is being battered about?

At your business, everyone from entry level teammates to the senior management team has some challenges or stress they didn’t have just a couple of months ago.  These may include loss of work among family members and reduced income; kids home from school 24/7; loved ones in nursing care and being unable to check on them; homeschooling demands for kids with energy to burn; and no opportunity to go to church, a restaurant, to visit family, or even to the park to relax.

Now stop and think of the impact if everyone in your

business or home does just one good deed every day for someone.  Or what if their heart is to call a different senior citizen or single parent every day just to say hello and truly inquire if there is anything they need.  For too many, social distancing has become social isolation, which can lead to many problems.  Consider the impact of creatively connecting with people around you to bring hope and a ray of sunshine and how it will multiply as you join up with others doing the same.

Smiles, encouragement, and acts of kindness are contagious.  Time shared, a caring heart, and love for our neighbor are priceless. So, look around.  There are opportunities to make a difference everywhere among your co-workers, your friends, your neighbors, and even those you have until now been too busy to get to know.

For any business, we know that profitability is vital for survival.  But during this unique time of “social distancing”, we are clearly reminded how important personal interaction is for human survival.  Right now, we have all been given a chance to invest in other people and to receive an amazing return on our investment of caring. Join us in taking time to step back and develop your interpersonal and “heart” muscles by doing things to bring hope and encouragement to others.  Such activities can truly allow our lives, families, and businesses to not just survive these difficult days, but to thrive.

To assist you in learning what really makes the people around you tick and to help you bring a new level of connectivity to your relationships, please check out “Understanding the Value of Your Love Languageelsewhere in this newsletter.

Featured Recruiter
Vic Heinold

Why Recruit?

That is a very good question.  When I exited CGB in the fall of 2011 I took a few months off to just relax and enjoy my family.  I knew when I started looking there were three things important to me in a new position:

  1. I did not want to do any international travel.
  2. I wanted to stay in agriculture where I had over 30 years of friendships and business relationships that I wanted to maintain.
  3. I wanted to stay in Covington, Louisiana until my youngest daughter finished her last three years of high school.

One of the first calls I made when I started my search was to Dave Allen at AGRI-SEARCH.  CGB had used his recruiting firm a lot. In fact, I had used him to find a junior trader for my team there one time.  I knew Dave was a straight shooter and a good Christian man, so where better to start.  During the first conversation I had with Dave I told him my three points I had to hit.  We talked several times, but one conversation took a different turn than what I was thinking. Dave said, “Have you ever considered recruiting?”  My answer was quick and short, “No!”  However, the more we talked and the more I learned about recruiting, the better the idea sounded.  It covered my wish list to the “T” and a lot more things I had never thought of.

So, in November 2011 I became a recruiter…in title anyway.  Outside looking in at this job it appeared to be easy.  You find clients who need workers, you find workers who are looking for a new job and “bada bing, bada boom” $$$…WRONG!  There was so much more involved than that. Fortunately, Dave was a big believer in sending his new recruiters off for training.  I went to Kansas City to train for three intensive days where I felt like I was trying to get a drink of water out of a fire hose.  I had a headache and a large dose of humility from that trip, but I was determined to succeed. I went straight to work the only way that was proven in the training and still true today…I hit the phone.  I developed my own style quickly.  I truly wanted to help both the client and the candidates, and my sincerity seemed to come through.  I went about every job assignment and recruiting call with a servant’s heart that knew this was about their businesses, and their careers, and not about me.  It didn’t matter if I thought this was the perfect opportunity for the candidate or the company; it came down to what the candidate (and of course the family) and the hiring manager thought.  I have to admit of all the jobs I have done this is the hardest, but when I finally acknowledge that all I can do is present the company and the candidate in the best light and surrender myself to say if it’s meant to be it will be, my job became a joy (not easy though).

I am approaching my ninth anniversary here at AGRI-SEACH and even in difficult times, like we have now, I am so thankful that I chose this career and that Dave gave me a shot.  What other job could I ever do that allows me to talk with my old friends and make new ones every day, in the agriculture industry, which I love, and hopefully can for many more years.

Understanding the Value of Your Love Language
By Dave Allen

For over twenty years as an agricultural recruiter, I have studied the similarities between a successful marriage and a successful employment situation.  The parallels are fascinating.  In both types of relationships, getting to know the other person, maintaining excellent communication, and understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses all play a key role.  Listening, understanding where the other person is coming from, and dealing with frustrations and disagreements that arise are also critical at both work and at home.

In the employment world, we often use tools that help break down a person’s personality profile. From that assessment, we can learn to better understand how to communicate successfully with someone. We can learn their personality strengths and weaknesses as well as their highly developed and not so developed skills. We can learn what to ask them to do and what is probably best to avoid asking of them.  Even their true motivators, or their “why”, can be discovered quite clearly from a seemingly simple 30-minute assessment.
