Moms & Memorial Day

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

In recent weeks, we have celebrated Mother’s Day and Memorial Day.  Quite fittingly, they fall in the same month.  For many people, their mother or grandmother has been the most influential and impacting person in their life.  Then on Memorial Day, we honor those veterans who have given their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have.  Many of us know family members, friends, or people from our community who given up their life so we can better live ours.

Think of the impact your mother, grandmother, or someone else had on you and how that has helped shaped your life in a positive way.  Then think of a veteran, anyone who has served in our nation’s military and perhaps gave their life, and remind yourself how their sacrifice allows you to wake up each morning to freely pursue the passions and dreams of your life.  Now, if any of these people are still living, take time today to reach out to them and tell them thank you.  Let them know how you appreciate the positive impact they have made on your life.

Elsewhere in this newsletter is an article, “The Treasure of True Grit”, that reminds me of both mothers and veterans.  It talks about conation, having that “will to succeed, the quest for success, that single-mindedness in pursuit of a goal, any goal, that all consistently successful people have.”  To me, it seems that is what most mothers who successfully complete the child rearing stages and what most veterans who serve our country have. How about you?

Featured Recruiter
Dave Allen - Why Am I An Ag Recruiter?

Most people who have known me most of my life could tell you about at least one of my passions.  For one, I love “farming”, whether meticulously marking the carpet with tractors and implements as a young boy, tilling and working in the garden to help feed our family, or working on our neighbor’s farm starting at age 12. “Farming”, or agriculture, has always been a passion and a part of who I am.

I also love getting to know people.  I have been accused of being able to carry on a great conversation with a fence post, and that is probably true.  I do enjoy talking, but just talking can be, as 1 Corinthians 13:1 says, a “noisy gong or a clanging symbol” if not done with love.
Dave & Rich, Circa 2007
Everyone has a story. I really like asking people questions and listening to and learning their story.  I enjoy being around people, whether at trade shows, ball games, church, or traveling because I enjoy connecting to what God is doing in and through their lives.

Another passion, a solid faith in God, was instilled in me from early on.  Being around family and friends at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg, Illinois, while growing up allowed me to watch and learn from others who experienced the joys, sorrows, challenges and victories of life.  With many in the congregation being farmers or from farm families, my faith journey included seeing how dependent the farmers (we all) are on the hand of God to provide everything we need in life.  Together we learned that one can till the soil, plant the seed, and care for the plants, but only God provides the rain and can make the seeds grow.

So how does all this add up to me being an Ag Recruiter?  In the late 1990’s, my wife and I had three young children, and I was a Sales Agronomist for Effingham Equity.  I loved my company and my work, helping our farmer customers increase yields and profitability.  But I had allergies, back issues, and often found myself telling my wife, “I love the people more than the plants.”  We talked and prayed for at least two years for an answer to the simple question, “What should I be doing with my life?” Then, while attending a trade show, I met a man named Rich Connell. Prior to that, I didn’t even know what recruiting was or how it worked.  But as we talked, and talked again, the thought of helping people find their career passion intrigued and excited me.  And the rest, they say, is history.

As an Agricultural Recruiter for 20+ years, it is a blessing to have my passions of agriculture, people and faith interact every day.  As our teammate Vic Heinold likes to say, we can do everything in our power to bring good candidates and companies together, but there is only so much we can do.  At some point, we must step back and put our work in God’s hands.  By faith, we must trust that if a candidate and a client are a good fit for each other, it will work out.  When things don’t work out, we can’t beat ourselves up, but must instead put our boots on and get back to work.  We must walk on in faith, trusting in the promise of my favorite scripture verse, Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”

The Treasure of True Grit

“Tell me about a time when you failed, and what you learned from that experience.”

Think of the most successful employees you’ve ever worked with, or the individuals you’ve mentored who excelled the most, or the leaders you’ve studied who seem to achieve every goal they set for themselves. Undoubtedly, a common thread between all will be that those individuals have the strength to learn why they failed, what to do in the future to succeed, and the willpower to get back on the horse and try again.

But exactly what is it that leads one person to try again when others just give up?

Industrial and organizational psychologists have spent decades researching this very subject. Angela Duckworth, assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and her research focuses on a personality trait she calls “grit.” She defines grit as “sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.” She writes that,“the gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.”
